Latin
[edit]Etymology
[edit]As the nominative and vocative plural ending for the second declension suffix -uus, unknown, but displaced Proto-Italic *-wosjo, genitive singular of *-wos. As the dative singular for fourth declension nouns, from Proto-Italic *-owei, dative singular of *-us.
Suffix
[edit]-uī
Usage notes
[edit]This ending is no longer used for neuter nouns in the fourth declension, being ousted by -ū, which now occupies all endings in the singular of neuter nouns except the genitive singular, which has -ūs. The fourth declension is the only declension group to have different dative singular forms between neuter nouns and non-neuter nouns.
