From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *gap ~ kap. Compare (OC *kaːbs, *kaːb, *ɡaːb, “to cover”) and (OC *ɡaːb, “to unite”) (STEDT). Outside of Sinitic, possibly cognate with Burmese ကပ် (kap, to approach).
