Etymology

[edit]

Attested in Classic of Mountains and Seas, Zhanguo Ce, Records of the Grand Historian, etc. Juha Janhunen tentatively suggests a connection to the ethnonyms Jurchen and Sushen. A common literal interpretation of this term is “morning () calm ()”, and thus Korea is also known as the “Land of the Morning Calm”.
