[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *kʷóteros, from *kʷos (“which”) + *-teros (contrastive suffix). Cognates include Latin uter, Sanskrit कतर (katará), Old English hwæþer (English whether) and Lithuanian katràs. Also see ἕτερος (héteros, “other, different”).
