Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Hellenic *ékeyenos, from ἐ- (e-, “augment”) (from Proto-Indo-European *h₁é) + *ḱe (“deictic particle”) + Proto-Indo-European *h₁enos (“that”) (compare ἔνη (énē)).[1] Middle part also in Latin ce-dō, cis, hi-c(e), last part also in Latin enim, nam, etc. Possibly a cognate with Old Norse hann (from Proto-Norse *ᚺᚨᚾᚨᛉ (*hanaʀ /*hānaʀ/)).
