Usage
[edit]This template may be used to format quotations from the 1611 King James Version (Authorized Version) of the Bible. It can be used to link to either of the following online versions of the work:
- The King James Bible Online website.
- The King James Bible at the Internet Archive.
Parameters
[edit]The template may be used with the following parameters:
|1=
or|book=
– the name of the book of the Bible quoted from – see the table below for the full list.|2=
or|chapter=
– mandatory if book indicated: the chapter of the book quoted. If a book has no chapters but is only divided into verses, use a hyphen to specify|chapter=-
.|3=
or|verse=
– mandatory if book indicated: the verse of the chapter quoted.|4=
or|verse_end=
– if citing a range of verses, use this parameter to indicate the verse that ends the range.|sig=
or|signature=
, and|verso=
–|sig=
or|signature=
can be used to specify the signature number quoted from, which is indicated at the bottom right of some pages. If quoting from a verso (left-hand) page specify|verso=1
or|verso=yes
; if|verso=
is omitted, the template indicates that a recto (right-hand) page is quoted.- If a signature number is not indicated on a page, extrapolate it from the signature numbers before and after the page and enclose it in brackets using
[
and]
For example, if the previous signature number is A3 and the next one is B, specify the missing signature number as|sig=[A4]
. - If quoting a range of signatures, for example, "signatures A2, verso – A3, recto", use
|sig=
or|signature=
, and|verso=
, to specify the signature at the start of the range, and|sigend=
or|signatureend=
, and|versoend=
, (if required) to specify the signature at the end of the range. - If this parameter is omitted, the template links the URL of the online version of the work to the section or verse.
- If a signature number is not indicated on a page, extrapolate it from the signature numbers before and after the page and enclose it in brackets using
|page=
– if a book, chapter and verse are specified, the template automatically creates a link to the King James Bible Online website. However, if you wish to create a link to the online version of the King James Bible at the Internet Archive (“IA”), as that work is unpaginated, use|page=
to specify the “page number” assigned by the IA to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL ishttps://archive.org/details/Bible1611/page/n78/mode/1up
, specify|page=78
.|section=
– if quoting from a section of the work other than one of the books of the Bible, such as the Epistle Dedicatory or the translators’ note, use this parameter to specify the name of the section, like this:|section=Epistle Dedicatory
;|section=The Translators to the Reader
. The parameter|url=
may be used in conjunction with|section=
to specify the URL of a webpage to link to, such as the version of the King James Bible at the Internet Archive mentioned above.|column=
or|columns=
– if quoting from the version of the King James Bible at the Internet Archive, use this parameter to specify the column number quoted from in Arabic numerals, either|column=1
or|column=2
. If quoting from both columns, either omit this parameter or separate the column numbers with an en dash, like this:|columns=1–2
.|5=
,|text=
, or|passage=
– the passage quoted from the Bible. For accuracy, please quote the 1611 version of the text, not an older or newer version.|footer=
– a comment about the passage quoted.|6=
,|t=
, or|translation=
– a modern translation of the passage quoted. To specify the New International Version, use|ver=NIV
or|version=NIV
.|brackets=
– use|brackets=on
to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.

List of page numbers at the Internet Archive
[edit]A list of page numbers of the sections and chapters at the Internet Archive to help find the page quotations are from more easily. Note that this list uses the page number in the URL (which the parameter |page=
of this template uses): the page number on the site is one number higher because the first page does not have a page number in the URL.
