[edit]Borrowed from Ancient Greek βύσσος (bússos), ultimately from Proto-Semitic *būṣ-. Cognate with Arabic بَزّ (bazz, “garment”), Aramaic בּוּצָא (būṣā, “byssus”), Classical Syriac ܒܘܨܐ (būṣā, “flax”), Chuvash пӳс (püs), Karakhanid بوُزْ (bȫz) and Turkish bez.
Compare also Mongolian бөс (bös), Jurchen 卜素 (/*pu-su/) and Manchu ᠪᠣᠰᠣ (boso), Turkic borrowings.

- An anthimeric (zero derivation) form of Proto-Turkic *buz- (“to spoil”). In that case; cognate with Chuvash пӑс (păs), Turkish bozmak, Bashkir боҙоу (boźow).
- Borrowed from Classical Persian بغض (buğz, “hate”), which in turn is from Arabic بَغَضَ (baḡaḍa, “to hate, detest, loathe”).
