Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *djas) : semantic 罒 + phonetic 者 (OC *tjaːʔ); the upper component is a web, not an eye.
Etymology
[edit]Baxter and Sagart (2014) derive it from a root *taʔ (“to place”), from which they also derive 緒 (OC *s-m-taʔ, “to arrange in order”). The root also has a velar variant *tak, whence 著 (OC *t<r>ak, “to place”), 著 (OC *t<r>ak-s, “visible”), 席 (OC *s-m-tAk, “mat”) (Baxter and Sagart, 2014; Schuessler, 2007).
