Glyph origin

[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *djas) : semantic + phonetic (OC *tjaːʔ); the upper component is a web, not an eye.

Etymology

[edit]

Baxter and Sagart (2014) derive it from a root *taʔ (to place), from which they also derive (OC *s-m-taʔ, “to arrange in order”). The root also has a velar variant *tak, whence (OC *t<r>ak, “to place”), (OC *t<r>ak-s, “visible”), (OC *s-m-tAk, “mat”) (Baxter and Sagart, 2014; Schuessler, 2007).
