From Pali vera (hate; hatred); perhaps via Old Khmer vera, verā (hostility, ill will; vengeance, revenge; evil deed; retribution; etc). Cognate with ᦵᦞᧃ (ven), Modern Khmer វេរ (vei), វេរា (veiriə). Compare Sanskrit वैर (vaira); Old Khmer biara; Modern Khmer ពៀរ (piə).
