From Pali purohita (chaplain); ultimately from Sanskrit पुरोहित (purohita, domestic priest; family priest); possibly via Old Khmer or Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer purohita, purohitta, pūrohita, pūrohitta (chaplain). Cognate with Modern Khmer បុរោហិត (boroohət).
