[edit]From Old Khmer parohita (“chaplain”), from Pali purohita (idem), ultimately from Sanskrit पुरोहित (purohita, “family priest”). Cognate with Modern Khmer បរោហិត (bɑɑroohət), Lao ປະໂລຫິດ (pa lō hit).
