Etymology

Possibly coined by Mao Zedong. On July 1 1957, Mao wrote for the editorial of the People's Daily:

讓資產階級及資產階級知識分子發動這一場戰爭，報紙在一個期間內，不登或少登正面意見，對資產階級反動右派的猖狂進攻不予回擊，一切整風的機關學校的黨組織，對於這種猖狂進攻在一個時期內也一概不予回擊，使群眾看得清清楚楚，什麼人的批評是善意的，什麼人的所謂批評是惡意的，從而聚集力量，等待時機成熟，實行反擊。有人說，這是陰謀。我們說，這是陽謀。 [MSC, trad.]

(Let the bourgeoisie and its intellectuals started this war, and the newspapers post either none or little direct responses for some time; no defense against the savage assault from the reactionary right wings, and none of the authoritative schools or political organizations supposed to rectify fought back against this kind of savage assault for some time. People would clearly see that whose critism is of good or bad intentions, therefore focusing the strength and waiting for the time to fight back. Some would say, this is a scheme. We would say, this is an overt trick.)
