Etymology 1

From Proto-Finno-Ugric *wide- (to kill). Cognates include Northern Mansi алуӈкве (aluňkve) and Komi-Zyrian вины (viny).[1] Possibly also related to the Turkic root reflected in e.g. Turkish öl- (to die).[2]
