Etymology

First attested in 1372. Of uncertain origin. Perhaps from Proto-Uralic *pürke- (*pᴕrγɜ-) (to turn, revolve, spin)[1] + -dít (causative suffix).[2]

  1. (transitive) to turn (change the direction or orientation of something)
  2. (transitive) to change the course of, to adapt (-ra/-re)
  3. (transitive) to translate (to change text from one language to another) (from -ról/-ről or -ból/-ből, into -ra/-re)
    Perfective: lefordít
  4. (transitive) to spend (some amount on money on something: -ra/-re)
  5. (intransitive) to turn the page, to turn over (mainly used in the imperative fordíts, also abbreviated in handwriting as ˙⁄.)
