Ideogram (指事) , two intervowen threads 幺 and a distinguishing mark 亠 on top. The whole character should represent a rope, as seen in 率 and 弦. However, this rope is different from 己 and 乃.
Etymology
[edit]Unknown. The oldest basic color term for "black" which was later replaced by 黑 (OC *hmlɯːɡ) (Schuessler, 2007).
One of its derivations is 袨 (OC *ɡʷeːn, “a kind of black formal wear”).
