From Proto-Finno-Ugric *kerjä- ~ *kerä- (to request). Cognates include Finnish kerjätä (to beg), Komi-Permyak корны (korny, to beg), Udmurt курыны (kuryny) and Northern Sami gearjidit (to beg).[1][2]
