[edit]From Middle Breton carat (recorded in the Catholicon), from Proto-Brythonic *karɨd, from Proto-Celtic *kareti (“to love”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂- (“to desire, wish”). Cognate with Cornish kara and Welsh caru.
