The Japanese part of speech called the particle (or relational) relates the preceding word to the rest of the sentence, or affects the mode of the preceding sentence. Japanese particles include everything described by the term 助詞 (じょし, joshi), as the concept is much better and more consistently defined in Japanese than in English.
