Etymology 1

From Proto-Vietic *p-ləh, from Proto-Mon-Khmer. Cognate with Bulo Stieng pləːh. This is the Central-Southern form, now widely used in written Vietnamese. Doublet of giở in modern written Vietnamese.

Attested as Northern Middle Vietnamese blở in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).
