Inherited from Proto-Turkic *sarïg (yellow), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *siaŕ(ï)- (white). Doublet of 𐽻𐽰𐽴𐽲𐽰𐽺 (sʾzqʾn).

Cognate with Chuvash шур (šur) and шурӑ (šură, white), Hungarian sárga, Bulgarian шарен (šaren, variegated), Mongolian ᠰᠢᠷ᠎ᠠ (sir-a), Khalaj ساروُغ (sâruğ, yellow, orange), Karakhanid سرغ (sarïɣ), Old Turkic 𐰽𐰺𐰍 (sarïg), Yakut араҕас (arağas), Yakut арыы (arıı, butter) and Turkish sarı.
