Sense 2 is from the mortar's containing ( (shòu)) spice ( (xīn)), and 受 and 辛 can be combined as .

Wèi Wǔ cháng guò Cáo É bēi xià, Yáng Xiūcóng, bēibèi shàng jiàn tí zuò “huángjuàn yòufù, wàisūn jījiù” bā zì. Wèi Wǔ wèi Xiū yuē: “Jiě bù?” Dá yuē: “Jiě.” Wèi wǔ yuē: “Qīng wèi kě yán, dài wǒ sī zhī.” Xíng sānshí lǐ, Wèi Wǔ nǎi yuē: “Wú yǐ dé.” Lìng Xiū bié jì suǒ zhī. Xiū yuē: “Huángjuàn, sè sī yě, yú zì wèi jué. Yòufù, shàonǚ yě, yú zì wèi miào. Wàisūn, nǚzǐ yě, yú zì wèi hǎo. Jī jiù, shòu xīn yě, yú zì wèi 辤.
