Glyph origin

[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *ɡʷlaːŋs, *kʰʷaːɡ) : semantic (hand) + phonetic (OC *kʷaːŋʔ) – to stretch or enlarge with hands.

Etymology

[edit]

Compared by Luce (1981) to Burmese ခင်း (hkang:, to spread, roll out), though there are phonetic problems, particularly with the final consonants.
