Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Apparently from a Proto-Lolo-Burmese *kaŋ² (to spread, stretch out), though STEDT adduces no cognates (nor does STEDT even have a page for the Lolo-Burmese root). Luce's comparison with Old Chinese (OC *ɡʷlaːŋs, *kʰʷaːɡ, “to spread out”) is phonetically problematic.[1] Note similarities to (OC *kronʔ, *krons, *ɡron, “to curl, roll up”).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /kʰɪ́ɴ/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: hkang: • ALA-LC: khaṅʻʺ • BGN/PCGN: hkin: • Okell: hkìñ
