One day, Guan Ning and Hua Xin were hoeing in the garden. They saw a piece of gold on the floor. Guan continued hoeing as if it were tiles and stones, but Hua picked up the piece of gold and then threw it away (as Guan expressed discontent). Another day, they were studying together. There was someone passing by in a chariot and splendid clothes. Ning kept reading as if nothing happened, but Xin stopped studying and went out to see what was happening. Ning then split the mat and sat away from him. “You're no longer my friend,” said Ning.
