Borrowed from Pali naraka or Sanskrit नरक (naraka); possibly via Old Khmer naraka, naroka, °narraka, °nāraka (“hell; purgatory”). Cognate with Burmese နရက် (na.rak), Modern Khmer នរក (nɔrŭək), Lao ນະລົກ (na lok), Dhivehi ނަރަކަ (naraka).
