From Proto-Tai *C̬.kumᴬ (pit), from Middle Chinese (MC khomX, “pit, hole”). Cognate with Isan ขุม, Lao ຂຸມ (khum), Shan ၶုမ် (khǔm), Tai Dam ꪄꪴꪣ, Tai Nüa ᥑᥧᥛᥴ (xúm), Ahom 𑜁𑜤𑜪 (khuṃ), Zhuang gumz, Zuojiang Zhuang kumq.
