Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *xytati, probably influenced semantically by хиба́ти (xybáty), from Proto-Slavic *xybati. Cognate with Belarusian хіста́ць (xistácʹ), Czech chytat, Silesian chytać, Bulgarian хи́там (hítam), Slovene hítatі.
