Etymology

Inherited from Old Ruthenian хи́жїй (xížij), further probably from Proto-Slavic *xyťьnъ with reduction and change *хꙑчьнꙑи (*xyčĭnyi) > *хижный (*xižnyj) > хижый (xižyj). Cognate with Russian хи́щный (xíščnyj).
