Claimed to be derived from Khmer យក្ខ (yĕək) or related to trăn (python), rắn (snake), or even Malay macan (tiger) by various folk etymologies.

More likely from a descendant of Arabic جن (jinn) or جان (jānn). Compare Eastern Cham ajin, Malay jin.
