[edit]Sino-Vietnamese word from 公 (“duke”), 侯 (“marquis”), 伯 (“count”) and 子 (“viscount”), from Chinese 公侯伯子男. Compare Japanese 公侯伯子男 (kōkōhakushidan). The correspondence between the Chinese and European ranks were wholly accidental, but were institutionalized in Qing China and Meiji Japan.
