Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 子爵, composed of 子 (“child; boy; man; philosopher; viscount”) and 爵 (“nobility rank”), literally "the rank of a viscount; viscounty". Mainly refers to the European rank. The Chinese rank did not include the suffix 爵 (tước), thus simply 子 (tử). See also công hầu bá tử nam.
