In Taberd (1838), "apple" was called bình bá, which is from some form of 蘋婆/苹婆 (píngpó). While bình bá is obviously obsolete (in fact, I can not find any other attestation), bình bát was also listed and is still in use. I have no idea that the second element is though.” |
