You should have been welcomed a long time ago. Here's the standard welcome message:

Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary!

And keep up the good work. Per utramque cavernam 13:36, 23 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks

Hey,

Just wanted to say I appreciate your contributions. I don't speak all the languages you contribute in, but I assume it's all equally high-quality.__Gamren (talk) 13:26, 11 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Dutch entries

[edit]

Thanks for your work on Dutch entries. I can only say that they are of a consistently high quality and very complete. Keep on the good job! ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 16:52, 23 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Christmas reading

Here's a little Dutch-language Christmas gift: the Nativity story in 5-grams by Battus (you will have to search for "55b Woord wordt vlees nieuw krols proza", because the page is enormous). ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 19:22, 24 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

In case you're looking for frequency lists or red-links to be filled, pls note these pages.

  1. User:Benwing2/uk-freq-fiction most likely needs a refresh but it gives you high frequency words still missing.
  2. User:Benwing2/sla-pro-uk-redlinks From Proto-Slavic reconstructions. Contains some obscure terms and errors. The actual reconstruction pages need a clean-up.
  3. Appendix:East Slavic word lists - a recent page I found.

User:Benwing2 might be able to refresh the top two, if you wish. There are also User:Matthias_Buchmeier#English-Ukrainian generated from translations from English. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 06:42, 26 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Atitarev These are really useful - many thanks for letting me know. Voltaigne (talk) 21:55, 26 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you @Apisite, the links are blue now. Voltaigne (talk) 21:13, 31 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

I've got a list of Ukrainian red-links myself, if you're interested in helping. (Not at all obligated) user:Hk5183/to do Uk

[edit]

Hi.

I knew that you would revert my changes but here's a counterargument: it's better to add all the sources to every single entry, even if some of them are still missing, because when they will finally be added to the dictionaries, we will have to add them manually here, and it's just tiresome. We have this philosophy when it comes to Polish entries, I think everyone should follow our ways because Polish entries are simply the best out of all the languages, and every editor should admire: me, @Vininn126, @BigDom, @Hythonia, @KamiruPL, @Hergilei, etc. UwU

Btw., thank you for taking care of Ukrainian lemmas, your entries are of a surprisingly high quality. Let's beat Russian okkkk, so yaaasss, slay queen. Shumkichi (talk) 09:20, 30 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Oh, btw., I've noticed a couple of a issues that you should take care of:
- write "gl|", not "gloss|";
- categorise personal nouns as "People";
- I don't know why Belarusian and Ukrainian editors copy Russian editors, but pls, stop using this weird template with "topics|" at the bottom and use "C|" instead;
- I suggest you follow our example and start adding derived and related terms using the template I used e.g. here: mokasyn;
- add transitivity while there are still not that many verbs, should not take much time. Shumkichi (talk) 09:33, 30 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Shumkichi I get your counterargument, but my counter-counterargument is that we shouldn't send readers on wild-goose chases for sources that don't exist (yet). Also, when SUM-20 gets round to publishing further volumes (presumably they will continue to be released in alphabetical order), {{R:uk:SUM-20}} could perhaps be added en masse to lemmas within the relevant alphabetical range using a bot? I am not one of the commanders of the bot army so don't know how practical this would be. P.S. Polish entries are indeed excellent and a source of inspiration for the Ukrainian ones - cheers! Voltaigne (talk) 09:46, 30 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
yeahh, I know we could run a bot but the question is how long it'll take for all the sources to get the update? but ok, I'm not going to insist on it and will shut up already. and srsly, thank you for adding all these Ukrainian lemmas, it's touching to see that someone is in this way implicitly showing their support for Ukraine and not Russia ;_; and even if I'm reading too much into it, it's still nice to see such elegant entries as Ukrainian and Belarusian are very often overlooked in favour of Russian. i know it's going to sound like Schadenfreude, but i take pleasure in seeing how shitty the Russian entries are xd Shumkichi (talk) 09:56, 30 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Underfell Flowey, Shumkichi What is the stress of the word теургія, which means theurgy? Apisite (talk) 11:08, 2 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Question about Ukrainian synonym template.

[edit]

Hi, Voltaigne. I didn't know how to "ping" you from the relevant page, so I am approaching you here. In the Ukrainian section of the газу page, you have used two colons after the hash on the га́зові synonym line. Is there a technical reason why two colons are necessary there, rather than one colon? DaveyLiverpool (talk) 21:57, 3 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

There originally was a reason for using "#::" - it lined up the synonym with the double-indented second point of the definition. But then a site-wide change to how indentation is rendered (I have no idea about the specifics) broke the alignment and made it look messy. The fix is to change it from "#::" to "##:". I've been making this change as and when I spot the need. Thanks for spotting this one. Voltaigne (talk) 22:51, 3 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Gratitude

[edit]

Hi. According to your user page, you don't speak Ukrainian. Still, you've created, I feel, the majority of entries about Ukrainian words in Wiktionary, and very well structured. Is that true? In any case, that's an impressive achievement! Please accept my words of gratitude. Gradilion (talk) 21:31, 21 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your kind message. We are approaching 20,000 Ukrainian lemmas, which feels like an important milestone and reflects a great team effort (there were fewer than 7,000 at the start of July 2021). I claim no competence in speaking Ukrainian but I read and listen to a lot, so maybe I should update my profile accordingly. Voltaigne (talk) 22:23, 21 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Big respect to you and your team! Perhaps a team wouldn't hurt me either, since I'm currently trying to make sense of Georgian - the language I didn't know a word in not long ago - and contribute its lexicon to Wiktionary at the same time. Gradilion (talk) 23:11, 21 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
LOL, I don't literally have a team! It's just me here. I was referring to the various editors whose individual and independent efforts are together contributing to the fast accumulation of Ukrainian entries on Wiktionary. Good luck with Georgian - I have dabbled in it intermittently but verb conjugation still remains largely mysterious to me. Voltaigne (talk) 23:26, 21 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Haha, I see, I assumed you're referring to somebody providing assistance behind the scenes. You're right, verb conjugation is perhaps the biggest challenge in Georgian, resources are scarce so far, probably the best being https://zmnebi.com/. If I happen to have the time, I might try to come up with conjugation tables for more verbs than there are now. Gradilion (talk) 00:49, 22 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

чому and навіщо as synonyms

[edit]

You connected these words as synonyms; I tend to disagree though, because, while they might share the English translation "why", чому means "for what reason" while навіщо means "for what purpose". Their difference is adequately conveyed in the usage notes of Russian зачем (Ukrainian чому/навіщо are kind of parallel to Russian почему/зачем):

заче́м (začém) differs from почему́ (počemú) in that the latter simply means, "Why?" while заче́м (začém) means, "What for?" Sometimes the words are interchangeable, but sometimes one is more appropriate than the other.

Gradilion (talk) 07:53, 31 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

They are indeed not one-hundred-percent synonymous, but synonymic relations are seldom perfect. I've added a usage example and usage note to each entry. Voltaigne (talk) 12:18, 31 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
"but synonymic relations are seldom perfect"
You are correct. At the same time, as a person who's native language is not English, I well remember my surprise that "for what reason" and "for what purpose" can in fact be said using the same word :) Gradilion (talk) 04:53, 1 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

I'm no expert on Ukrainian pronunciation of course, but judging by my decent knowledge of the IPA it seems to me that the end of this word is not represented in the IPA transcription currently shown in the entry. Acolyte of Ice (talk) 14:22, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome - and many thanks to you for responding to my requests for etymologies, IPA and inflection tables! I'm still in the earliest stages of my exploration of this language so am grateful for your greater knowledge. Voltaigne (talk) 21:45, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
If you ever want to invest more time into the Mansi languages, you are more then welcomed to join the Uralics of Russia Discord server, if discord is your thign of course.
Hope this doesn't come off as blatant advertisment on our part haha Ewithu (talk) 22:05, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

відшкодувати audio

[edit]

Hello, why do you believe the audio is incorrect?

If you have reasons to believe the audio is mistaken, please nominate it for deletion as described in commons:Help:Nominate for deletion. My bot operates not just on en.wiktionary, but also on de.wiktionary. Reverting edits here is not a proper solution. Also, there are bots not written by me, I cannot influence their 'blacklist' (if they have any). Derbeth talk 10:25, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi. The file that DerbethBot added, and which I reverted (File:Uk-відшкодувати.ogg), stresses the wrong syllable. The file that is there currently (File:Uk-відшкодувати2.oga) is correct. I greatly appreciate the many correct Ukrainian audio files that DerbethBot added to en.wiktionary entries on its recent run, but unfortunately there are multiple instances of wrong stress in files from that particular source. I will seek to resolve the issue on Commons as you suggest. Voltaigne (talk) 17:17, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Development of Belarusian Lemmas

[edit]

Hello, I am an active editor of the Ukrainian lemmas on here as well, and seeing that you are someone who has contributed the most to the development of Ukrainian lemmas, I was wondering if we can likewise work on the Belarusian language, as it is endangered, and this would help promote its learning and usage. There are also very limited resources for it, so having a sophisticated Wiktionary would be nice. The Belarusian wiktionary is almost empty compared to others, and there are pretty much no editors. Thank you :) Kohannya (talk) 03:09, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I would be delighted to help with this. Here's one entry to start with. There will be more to come as I learn more about the language. I've been adding Belarusian cognates to Ukrainian etymology sections, so at least these are searchable on Wiktionary. And many thanks for your contributions! Voltaigne (talk) 15:32, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Bot Question

υποκοριστικό (diminutive) & χαϊδευτικό (hypocoristic)

[edit]

I believe they are called false friends (for English -to- Modern Greek). hypocoristic has the sense "endearing" exactly as in Ancient Greek “ὑποκοριστικός” especailly as epithet of ὄνομα n (ónoma, name). But in Mod.Gr. the υποκοριστικό (ypokoristikó) always has the diminutive sense "little" (wheather stricly diminutive, or emotional diminutive). χαϊδευτικό n (chaïdeftikó, hypocoristic, endearing) is usually a clipping, or some other formation. Sorry, that at υποκορισμός, υποκοριστικός, I may not express this as clearly as an anglophone would. Thank you for your excellent Modern Greek lemmata. ‑‑Sarri.greek  I 10:22, 26 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the explanation, that's very clear. Voltaigne (talk) 10:34, 26 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
