Welcome!

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contribution so far. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

  • How to edit a page is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
  • Entry layout explained (ELE) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard, the easiest way to do this is to copy exactly an existing page for a similar word.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words Wiktionary is interested in including. There is also a list of things that Wiktionary is not for a higher level overview.
  • The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • We have discussion rooms in which you can ask any question about Wiktionary or its entries, a glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome! --EncycloPetey 04:13, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Voting

[edit]

Hi NMaia. Apologies for not using LT; I find it extremely annoying. Just a note that you can't cast your vote after a vote has ended; please look before adding your vote. Thanks —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 18:48, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

@Metaknowledge: Heh, turns out I didn't read the fine print (vote end date). Thanks for reverting it, in this case :) NMaia (talk) 18:51, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Module Error at 𠏹

I wouldn't think of creating a Han character entry, and I've had a year of Mandarin at UCLA. Please be more careful.

Thanks for fixing it! As for creating it, someone's gotta do it at some point.

NMaia (talk)22:19, 25 November 2019

Please do not remove {{trans-bottom}} after {{checktrans-top}}. That causes the rest of the page ("See also" sections and so on) to be trapped inside the collapsed "Translations to be checked" box!

Translation lemmas

When you add translations for words with masculine and feminine forms (like ephemeral, lumberjack and indebted), please add only the masculine. — Ungoliant (Falai) 15:50, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Ungoliant (Falai)15:50, 26 August 2012

Hi! Sure. But why?

Pikolas (talk)15:52, 26 August 2012

The masculine form is considered the lemma form. It's the same reason why we only give the infinitive form on Romance languages for translations, not every possible conjugated form that it might have.

Good to know, thanks.

Pikolas (talk)16:02, 26 August 2012

Standard practice, and it prevents clutter. The lemma’s entry’s headline should link to the feminine form anyway, see madeireiro for example. — Ungoliant (Falai) 16:02, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

I know technically anything can be a valid Esperanto word through the Esperanto systems of derivation, but you've been adding a lot of unattested 'hyponyms' which is against the wiktionary policy of "only 'real' words". Basically if a word hasn't been used in Esperanto writing in the past, it doesn't get added here. So... I'm going to be a dick and revert these things, and if you really want them to be added, you need to make sure that they have been used in writing before. — [Ric Laurent] — 10:32, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Sorry mate, I wasn't aware of this policy. No worries. Pikolas 13:37, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, check out WT:CFI. It probably sucks and won't answer any real questions because it's a policy page, but it *might* help lol. Thanks for understanding, I know I get pissed when people revert shit I've spent hours on. — [Ric Laurent] — 14:01, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
