[edit]From *xodъ (“motion, movement”) + *-iti, from Proto-Indo-European *sod-, from the root *sed- (“to sit”). Compare *sadìti.
Indo-European cognates include Ancient Greek ὁδεύω (hodeúō, “to wander”).
