Etymology

[edit]

According to Yuanhe Xingzuan:

箕子支子食采子孫鮮于 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
箕子支子食采子孙鲜于 [Classical Chinese, simp.]
From: 812, Lin Bao(林寶), 元和姓纂
Jīzǐ fēng yú Cháoxiǎn/Zhāoxiān, zhīzǐ Zhòng shícài yú , zǐsūn yīn hé xiānyú wéi shì. [Pinyin]
Jizi was enfeoffed in present-day Korea and began his new dynasty. Jizi's non-heir second son had been granted a fief named Yu, his descendants therefore combined 'Xian' (taken from the kingdom name) with 'Yu', the fiefdom name, forming the compound surname 'Xianyu.'
