Etymology

[edit]

From Old Japanese, first attested in the Nihon Shoki (720 CE).

Originally a compound of (hito, man, person) +‎ (to, combining particle) +‎ (nari, shape; disposition; character, in turn from the (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb () (naru, to become).).[1][2][3][4]

The kanji spelling is jukujikun (熟字訓), borrowed from Chinese 為人 / 为人.
