Etymology

From Leviticus 19:18 (among other passages). An early attestation comes from the Delegates' Version [1855]:

勿報仇、勿蓄怨、愛人如己、爾必守我耶和華所命。 [Classical Chinese, trad.]

Wù bàochóu, wù xùyuàn, ài rén rú jǐ, ěr bì shǒu wǒ Yēhéhuá suǒ mìng. [Pinyin]

You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people; but you shall love your neighbour as yourself. I am Yahweh. [World English Bible]

Probably popularized through the Chinese Union Version:
