Etymology
[edit]From the Book of Rites, Book 1 (《禮記·曲禮上》):
- 人生十年曰幼,學。二十曰弱,冠。三十曰壯,有室。……百年曰期,頤。 [Classical Chinese, trad.]

- Rén shēng shí nián yuē yòu, xué. Èrshí yuē ruò, guàn. Sānshí yuē zhuàng, yǒu shì....... Bǎinián yuē qī, yí. [Pinyin]
- When one is ten years old, we call him a boy; he goes (out) to school. When he is twenty, we call him a youth; he is capped. When he is thirty, we say, 'He is at his maturity;' he has a wife. […] At a hundred, he is called a centenarian, and has to be fed.
