Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *yuktás, from Proto-Indo-European *yugtós, from *yewg- (“to yoke”). Cognate to Avestan 𐬫𐬎𐬑𐬙𐬀 (yuxta), Old English ġeiht, and possibly Ancient Greek ζευκτός (zeuktós). By surface analysis, युज् (yuj) + -त (-ta).
