[edit]Learned borrowing from Sanskrit युक्त (yukta, “joined, yoked”); ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *yugtós, from the root *yewg- (“to join, yoke”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ζυγόν (zugón) (whence English zygote), Latin iungō (whence English join, junction), iugum (whence English jugal, jugular) and Old English geoc (whence English yoke). Doublet of যুক্তি (jukti, “unification; logic”), যোগ (jōg, “to add, join; yoga”), যোগ্য (jōggo, “fit, worthy”), যুগ (jug, “era”), যুগল (jugol, “pair, couple”), যুগ্ম (jugmo, “pair, joint”), জুতা (juta, “shoe”).
