Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *mártas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mártas, from Proto-Indo-European *mór-tos, from *mer- (“to die”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬙𐬀 (marəta), Ancient Greek μορτός (mortós).
