Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *mórtos (mortal, man), ultimately from the root *mer- (to die). Cognate with Sanskrit मर्त (márta) and Avestan: 𐬨𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬙𐬀 (marəta). See also βροτός (brotós, mortal man).
