Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Cognate with Punjabi ਛਿਤਰਨਾ (chitranā), Nepali छित्रिनु (chitrinu), Marathi शितडणे (śitaḍṇe), Sindhi ڇِٽڙائِڻُ (chiṭṛāiṇu).

Turner reconstructs Ashokan Prakrit *𑀙𑀺𑀢𑁆𑀭𑁆 (*chitr) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀭- (-ra-).[1] Platts instead suggests inheritance from Sanskrit क्षिप्त (kṣipta, thrown), from क्षिप् (kṣip).[2] Note the existence of Prakrit 𑀙𑀺𑀢𑁆𑀢 (chitta, touched) and 𑀔𑀺𑀢𑁆𑀢 (khitta, thrown).

Compare the synonyms छिड़कना (chiṛaknā) and छींटना (chī̃ṭnā).
