Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *gaśćáti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gasćáti, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷm̥sḱéti, a present tense formation of the root *gʷem-. Cognate with Ancient Greek βᾰ́σκω (báskō). For different formations, see the etymology of the root.
