From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (tyšnk' /⁠tišnag⁠/), from Old Persian, from Proto-Iranian *tŕ̥šnakah, from Proto-Iranian *tŕ̥šnah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tŕ̥šnas, from Proto-Indo-European *tr̥s-nó-s, from *ters- (dry).

Compare Avestan 𐬙𐬀𐬭𐬱𐬥𐬀 (taršna), Sanskrit तृष्णा (tṛṣṇā), Ancient Greek τέρσομαι (térsomai), Latin terra, Old Armenian թառամիմ (tʻaṙamim), English thirst.
