From Proto-Indo-European *tḱen- (strike), with a *y progressive aspect marker and metathesis of Proto-Indo-European *tḱ- into Proto-Greek *kt- (compare χθών (khthṓn)).

Cognate with Sanskrit क्षन् (kṣan, hurt, injure).
