Etymology

Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ἐπάγγελμα (epángelma)[1] (Hellenistic sense "profession", ancient "promise"), and semantic loan from French profession.[2] By surface analysis, επ- (ep-, upon) +‎ αγγέλλω (angéllo, Ι announce) +‎ -μα (-ma, ing). Calque of Latin professiō (avowal, public declaration).
