[edit]From Proto-Hellenic *deiknéumi, from Proto-Indo-European *deyḱ- (“to show, point out”) + -νῡμῐ (-nūmi), from Proto-Indo-European *-néwti. Cognates include Latin dīcō, Sanskrit दिशति (diśáti) and Old English tǣċan (English teach).[1]
