[edit]From Byzantine Greek ἁλάτιν (halátin), from Koine Greek ἁλάτιον (halátion), a diminutive of Ancient Greek ἅλας (hálas), from ἅλς (háls), from Proto-Indo-European *séh₂l-, *séh₂ls. Compare the borrowed doublet άλας (álas) and Mariupol Greek а́лас (álas).
